Working from Himachal Pradesh
The short version of everything we've learned about living and working here.
Yes, and it has been the first choice for a while. Dharamkot and Old Manali have cafes where half the tables are on video calls by ten in the morning, and Bir runs two fiber lines into the places that host remote workers. The catch is that it varies a lot from one valley to the next and even from house to house, so a tested speed matters more here than anywhere else.
Bir if your days are full of calls. Dharamkot if you want other remote workers around you. Old Manali if you want the most going on after work and don’t mind paying for it. Naggar and Palampur are proper villages close to bigger towns, and Jibhi and Tirthan trade some bandwidth for real quiet. Shimla is the practical pick, with hospitals, trains and steady infrastructure.
Most people spend between ₹15,000 and ₹50,000 a month once rent and food are in. Palampur and the Kangra villages sit at the low end, Bir and Dharamkot in the middle, and Old Manali near the top, with May and June costing more almost everywhere. Weekly stays cost more per night, so if you think you’ll stay, book the month.
Someone from our team stays two days in every home. We work a full day from the desk, test the wifi morning and night, check what the power backup really runs, and note how the house handles winter and water. The numbers and dates go on the listing. Homes and private rooms rent by the week or the month.
Bir has the most dependable connections, with dual fiber and Jio 5G. Dharamkot, Dharamshala, Old Manali, Naggar and Shimla have fiber too. Jibhi and Tirthan run mostly on 4G and vary house to house, which is why every listing shows the speed we measured and when.
Plan on ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for a month, rent and food included. Palampur is the cheapest of the towns we cover, Old Manali among the dearest, and May and June cost more almost everywhere.
March to June and September to November are the sweet spots. Monsoon works if you do not mind rain and the occasional power cut. Winter is beautiful in Manali and Shimla but ask us about heating before you book.
Bir, Dharamkot and Old Manali are routinely fine for women on their own, and each town page says which areas to skip after dark. We only list homes where we'd stay ourselves, and someone from our team is reachable around the clock during your stay.
