The room is painted in blocks of green and pink, with string lights over the bed and a shelf holding books and a plant. Tall windows with red and grey curtains face the balcony. The balcony has artificial grass, a table and a chair, and looks across to a red-roofed building and a ridge of forest, with a snow peak far off in one photo.

The bed is a double with a teal throw, and each side has a wooden bedside table, one with a kettle on it. Prayer flags run along the front of the building, which has two floors of balconies. One photo shows the terrace under deep snow.

Safety in Dharamkot

Dharamkot has hosted long-stay travellers for decades, and the cafes on the main lane stay open until about 11 at night. The gaps are practical ones: one small pharmacy and no clinic in the village, so anything beyond the basics means a walk down to McLeod Ganj, and anything urgent means Delek Hospital's 24-hour emergency ward further down the hill.
