The bedroom has two large windows, and both look straight into trees on a steep green slope. A plain wooden desk and a plastic chair sit under the bigger one. Outside there is a balcony with a black metal rail and a pot of flowers, and the hill rises beyond the rail.

The bed is a double, covered in a blue blanket and a red throw, with a couple of plastic chairs by the wall. The building is a tall white block with a balcony on each floor. The photos include a wide view down the valley to the town, and one of snow on the roofs below.

Safety in Dharamkot

Dharamkot has hosted long-stay travellers for decades, and the cafes on the main lane stay open until about 11 at night. The gaps are practical ones: one small pharmacy and no clinic in the village, so anything beyond the basics means a walk down to McLeod Ganj, and anything urgent means Delek Hospital's 24-hour emergency ward further down the hill.
