The cost of living in Dharamkot is about ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 a month for one person with a furnished studio or one-bedroom flat, a mix of cafe and home meals, a coworking desk and a few yoga classes. Cook most meals in a basic room and the month can come to about ₹16,000. Take a top-end flat, eat out daily and lease a scooter, and it reaches about ₹66,000. Rent moves most. These are 2026 prices, checked on 10 October 2026.

Everything is in rupees for one person, and the budgets leave out the journey to the village, which is priced near the end. If you want to stay by the week or the month, homes and rooms in Dharamkot are let both ways.

Cost of living in Dharamkot: what ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 a month buys

Budget ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 for a normal working month. The table above builds it line by line and comes to about ₹35,800. Rent, food and a desk take most of it. A cheaper room or no desk pulls it toward ₹30,000, and a dearer room pushes it past ₹40,000.

Prices move with the season, and monthly rents are agreed in person, so the number you hear on a doorstep can differ from the one here. The budgets also leave out your phone plan, which depends on the operator you pick.

Dharamkot budget for a month: comfortable, frugal and generous

We’d plan around the comfortable month if you are working for a month or more, because the room is your office and the desk is there on the days the room is not. You rent a furnished studio or 1BHK in Dharamkot or Upper Bhagsu, cook breakfast at home and eat lunch or dinner in a cafe. A few yoga classes and the odd chartered auto round it out. The build comes to about ₹35,800.

The frugal month is about ₹16,000, and it is a quiet one. It assumes a basic room at about ₹8,000, ₹6,000 of groceries, ₹1,500 for power and gas, a share of a fibre line and a few shared rides. You cook, you walk down to McLeod Ganj and you skip the desk and the classes. The rent is the line to test first, because furnished studios ask from ₹15,000, and at that rent the same month comes to about ₹23,400. Treat the ₹8,000 room as something to look for when you arrive, not something to count on from home.

The generous month, about ₹66,000, buys the top of the market: a flat at ₹24,000, cafes every day, a desk at the dear end, classes and a leased scooter. A premium coliving room runs about ₹65,000 to ₹67,000 a month with GST before you eat, so this column is roughly what that room alone costs. We’d pick it only if a particular room is the point, because most of the extra goes on rent and cafes.

Dharamkot monthly rent: studios and rooms at ₹15,000 to ₹24,000

Furnished studios and one-bedroom flats with a kitchenette in Dharamkot and Upper Bhagsu ask ₹15,000 to ₹24,000 a month in 2026. A furnished one-bedroom or cottage is quoted at ₹13,000 to ₹22,000, a private room in a homestay at ₹14,000 to ₹26,000 and a premium chalet at ₹28,000 to ₹40,000. Quotes that include fibre and utilities run ₹16,000 to ₹28,000.

The village climbs from about 1,900 m in the lower lanes, near the road head and Tushita, to about 2,100 m at the top by the Gallu Devi temple. Between them sit the main village around the chowk and, above it on footpaths, Upper Dharamkot and Heini. Upper Bhagsu is a 10 to 15 minute walk down the other side. The lane changes how you live more than what you pay: the road stops at the road head, and everything above it is carried on foot, groceries and luggage included.

Room rent in Dharamkot: what the price should include

Compare two rooms only after you know what each includes. A rent with fibre and utilities inside will look higher than one without. Where electricity is metered it is billed at ₹7 to ₹10 a unit. Check heating, backup power and the deposit too, and agree the deposit, the refund date and what can be deducted in writing before you pay. Colivings quote their monthly prices on request, so ask for one in writing.

Nightly rates in Dharamkot: a few nights first, then agree the month

Because monthly rents are agreed in person, many people book a few nights first and negotiate once they have seen rooms. In October 2026 a hostel in Upper Bhagsu listed beds from about ₹1,330 and a private double at ₹3,200 a night, and a coliving room for two in Dharamkot ran about ₹2,500 to ₹2,650 a night for 21 to 24 October. Where to stay in Dharamkot sets the lanes side by side.

Dharamkot long stay cost: how season and match days move the price

March to June is the busy stretch in the Kangra valley, and in early October 2026 hotels were 80 to 90 percent full over a long weekend. Rooms and taxis get scarce on match days at the Dharamshala stadium; the 2026 matches fell on 11, 14, 17 and 26 May. The film festival at Upper Dharamshala runs from 29 October to 1 November 2026. If your dates sit on any of these, ask for a price for those dates and ask again before you pay.

The best months for a long stay are March to early June and October to November. September is still wet. The monsoon arrived on 30 June in 2026 and withdrew on 3 October, and July and August are the wettest months, with the heaviest rain and the worst damage to the roads. The best time to visit Dharamkot shows how the months compare.

Food costs in Dharamkot: cooking at home against eating in cafes

A plate of momos with red sauce Momos, the cheap meal on every menu.

Food is the line you control most. Groceries for a month of cooking run ₹6,000 to ₹9,000, and a mix of cafe meals and home breakfasts runs ₹12,000 to ₹18,000. The village has a few small general stores for daily needs, and anything bigger means a trip to McLeod Ganj.

A cafe main is ₹200 to ₹350 and a coffee ₹100 to ₹150. Per head, a meal costs ₹200 to ₹400 at the cheaper cafes and ₹400 to ₹600 at the dearer ones. These per-person price bands were current on 10 October 2026, with the number of customer reports in brackets:

  • Moonlight Cafe: ₹200 to ₹400 (88)
  • The Birdhouse Cakery, a bakery: ₹200 to ₹400 (27)
  • Family Pizzaria: ₹200 to ₹400 (14)
  • Space Out: ₹400 to ₹600 (26)
  • Bodhi Greens, vegan: ₹400 to ₹600 (80)
  • Morgan’s Place, Italian: ₹400 to ₹1,000 (75)
  • Trek and Dine: ₹200 to ₹1,200 (147)

The widest bands mostly show the gap between the cheapest and dearest dish. Small cafes sometimes close for stretches between seasons, so ask your host which are open. Food and cafes in Dharamkot covers where to eat.

On alcohol, shops sell from 9 am to midnight and bars from noon to midnight under the state’s 2026 to 2027 excise policy, and 2 October is a dry day. Check the printed price on a bottle, because shops in Dharamshala town have been reported charging ₹20 to ₹60 above it.

Getting around Dharamkot: one road, long walks and a ₹250 auto

One road reaches the village from McLeod Ganj. It is about 2 km and 10 minutes by taxi or auto. The road has been in poor repair since about 2024, with collapsed retaining walls, and autos struggle on it. A chartered auto cost about ₹250 in 2023, so agree the fare before you get in and expect it to be higher. There is no local bus.

On foot, McLeod Ganj is 25 to 40 minutes down and longer back up, so what you pay for is mostly the ride up with bags. A leased scooter with fuel is ₹4,000 to ₹5,500 a month. It saves that ride but stops at the road head, where the village carries on by footpath, so we’d leave it to the generous budget.

Coworking and internet in Dharamkot: desks, fibre and a backup SIM

A desk in a coworking space runs ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 a month or ₹500 to ₹800 a day. The comfortable budget carries ₹4,000 and the generous one ₹8,000, and the frugal one works from the room.

Fibre from BSNL Bharat Fibre and Airtel Xstream reaches the coworking spaces and some homes. A line of your own costs ₹800 to ₹1,200 a month if you rent a flat, and some rents include it. Which provider serves a home, and how well, varies by building. Ask your host for a speed test taken in the home that week, and keep a second SIM from another network to use as a hotspot on the day the fibre fails.

Yoga, courses and Triund fees in Dharamkot: what to budget

Drop-in yoga is ₹300 to ₹800 a session, and a month of classes is ₹3,000 to ₹6,000. Courses are priced by their centres:

  • Tushita: the 10-day Introduction to Buddhism runs 14 to 23 October, 3 to 12 November and 17 to 26 November 2026, with a suggested minimum donation of ₹8,600 and a ₹2,000 deposit that is not refunded. Drop-in meditation is at 9 am, Monday to Saturday. The centre is closed in December and January.
  • Dhamma Sikhara (Vipassana): free. Every 10-day course to 26 November 2026 is full, so look to 15 March 2027, with applications opening about 15 January.
  • Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre: a 5-day course on 23 to 27 October 2026 from ₹5,500, and a 9-day course on 29 October to 7 November from ₹21,500.
  • Library of Tibetan Works and Archives: classes run from 11 March to 11 December, with ₹100 to register and then ₹400 a month for philosophy or ₹600 for language. It sits at Gangchen Kyishong, below McLeod Ganj.
  • Triund trail: ₹100 a person a day and ₹550 a tent for two, the figures last set in January 2024.

Tushita courses are residential and you may not leave the property, so plan the dates around the room you are renting. Teachings by the Dalai Lama are free, and registering at the main temple costs ₹10.

Hidden costs of living in Dharamkot: heating, power, water, cash

Winter costs more than people expect. January ranges from 5.9 to 16.0°C at Dharamshala town, and Dharamkot is a few degrees cooler. Heating or firewood takes the power and gas line from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 up to about ₹3,500. A guesthouse charged ₹200 a day for a gas heater in 2023, so ask whether heating is in the rent.

Short power cuts happen in monsoon storms, and not every home has backup. Ask whether there is an inverter and whether it runs the router. Water is short in this part of the hills as well: Tushita asks its students not to wash laundry on site because of water shortages in the area, and landslides disrupted supply lines to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj in August 2025. Ask your host about water and where laundry goes.

The village has no ATM, so bring cash up from McLeod Ganj. It has one small pharmacy, open to 9 pm. Delek Hospital at Gangchen Kyishong, below McLeod Ganj, is open 24 hours with an emergency ward.

Dharamkot vs Manali: monthly cost compared

Dharamkot’s comfortable month sits at the bottom of Manali’s. Manali’s comfortable month runs ₹35,800 to ₹69,800 with a scooter, against about ₹35,800 here with autos. A private room with wifi and a desk in Manali is ₹18,000 to ₹35,000, against ₹15,000 to ₹24,000 for a furnished studio or 1BHK in Dharamkot. The top of the Manali range is higher because its serviced chalets and rooms in Old Manali cost more.

Dharamkot arrival costs: the journey sits outside the monthly budget

The budgets start when you reach the village. An overnight Volvo from Delhi to Dharamshala takes about 12 to 13 hours and costs roughly ₹1,250 to ₹1,550, so check the fare when you book. Some buses end at the Dharamshala bus stand, about 10 km below McLeod Ganj. IndiGo’s Chandigarh flight to Gaggal airport restarted on 31 August 2026 and runs four days a week from about ₹3,200.

From the bus stand, the Dharamshala Skyway ropeway to McLeod Ganj runs from 10 am to 8 pm for about ₹550, and a return ticket is valid for 3 days; check the fare at the counter. Then take an auto or taxi up. How to reach Dharamkot has the routes and the road closures to ask about.

Which Dharamkot budget fits you, and what to ask the host

Frugal suits you if you cook, can live in one room and don’t need a desk or classes. Comfortable is for working remotely for a month or longer with a room that doubles as an office. Generous makes sense when the room, the cafes and the classes matter more than the bill. If you are unsure, plan from ₹36,000 and add a heating line if you come between December and February.

Before you pay, ask the host:

  • What does the rent include: electricity, gas, fibre, water?
  • Is heating included, or charged by the day?
  • What does the backup run: the router, a heater?
  • Which provider is the fibre, and can you see a speed test taken in the home this week?
  • What is the deposit, and when is it refunded?
  • Is there a weekly rate, and does the price change for these dates?
  • What is the way to the door from the road head with luggage?

Our homes and rooms are let by the week or the month. Whoever you book with, get these answers in writing.
