The best time to visit Rishikesh is from mid-October to late November, when the air is dry, days sit at 25 to 29 C and the rafting season is a few weeks old. Mid-February to mid-March comes second. Most advice stops there. Three things complicate it. The monsoon takes July to mid-September off the calendar, 2027 puts the Yoga Festival and Haridwar’s Ardh Kumbh bathing days into March, and a weak monsoon in 2026 brought power cuts to the state in September.
Rishikesh has no weather station of its own. Temperatures and rain below are long-term averages (1991 to 2020) from the India Meteorological Department’s nearby stations, Dehradun and Roorkee.
Best time to visit Rishikesh by goal: work, rafting, yoga, quiet
- A working month: mid-October to late November. Driest and clearest, with 25 to 29 C days and 11 to 16 C nights. Weekend jams and the Diwali weekend (7 to 9 November in 2026) are the costs.
- Rafting: October to May. The season restarts in the last week of September, but the first weeks are unreliable. The things to do guide covers the other activities.
- Yoga and ashrams: March for the festival, any other month for classes. Drop-in studios run all year, and at least one Tapovan studio changes its timetable on 1 November and 2 March.
- Low prices: July to mid-September for nightly stays. The price is rain, a high river and a shut rafting season. For dry weather at lower prices, take mid-November to mid-December.
- Quiet: December to January. Cold nights and few crowds, apart from Christmas week and the Ardh Kumbh build-up from 14 January 2027.
Best time for river rafting in Rishikesh: closing and restart dates

The rafting committee and district tourism officials close rafting, and no date in law fixes it. The usual close is 30 June, for the monsoon. The earliest written reopening date is 1 September, but in practice the river decides. The season restarted on 23 September 2024, 27 September 2025 and 23 September 2026.
A high river can end it early: on 24 June 2025 rafting was suspended at Muni Ki Reti with the Ganga at 338 m against a 339 m warning mark. It can also pause once running. The 2026 season began with a puja at Shivpuri on 23 September and was paused on 26 September under a red alert. New rules that year made helmets and certified life jackets mandatory.
The 2026 to 2027 rate list runs from ₹600 for the 12 km stretch from Phool Chatti, through ₹1,000 for 16 km from Shivpuri and ₹1,500 for 26 km from Marine Drive, to ₹2,500 for 35 km from Kaudiyala, all ending at Neem Beach. Operators may quote more, so confirm at booking. We’d plan rafting for October to May and treat the first fortnight after restart as unreliable.
Rishikesh weather by season: what each one is really like
Dusk on the Ganga at Rishikesh.
Rishikesh in winter (December to January): dry, sunny, cold nights
Days are a comfortable 20 to 22 C, and it hardly rains. Nights fall to 6.6 or 7.6 C, and unheated rooms need warm layers. Christmas week and New Year are the busiest days of the cold season.
Rishikesh in spring (February to March): mild days, second window
Days climb from 22.5 to 27.4 C with light rain. March 2027 is the exception. Rooms tighten for 6 to 15 March around the Ardh Kumbh bathing days and the Yoga Festival.
Rishikesh in summer (April to mid-June): hot, with pilgrim traffic
Dehradun averages 32.5 C in April and 35.3 C in May, Roorkee 35.4 C and 38.0 C. Nights stay above 21 C from May. The Char Dham season sends 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles a day along the highway. AC is the main cost.
Rishikesh in monsoon (mid-June to September): three windows
Rain falls on 10 to 22 days a month, and humidity reaches 77 to 83 percent from July to September. Rishikesh sits between wetter Dehradun and drier Roorkee, at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 mm a year, nearly all of it June to September.
- Mid-June to mid-July: onset. The monsoon reached the state on 20 to 24 June in 2025 and about 30 June in 2026, and rafting closes.
- Mid-July to mid-August: the wettest weeks and the Kanwar Yatra. The Ganga crossed the warning level on 6 August 2026.
- Mid-August to September: rain tapers, rafting restarts in the last week, and in a weak monsoon year the power grid is under strain.
Rishikesh in autumn (October to November): the easiest season
Rain is nearly gone: 38.3 mm in October and 5.2 mm in November. The drawbacks are long-weekend jams, the Diwali weekend and the chance that a red alert pauses rafting.
Rishikesh weather and temperature month by month: all twelve compared
Rishikesh in January: clear cold days and the Kumbh build-up
January days reach 19.7 C and nights drop to 6.6 C, with 2.8 rainy days. The record low at Dehradun is -1.1 C. Unheated rooms need warm layers, so ask if yours is heated. Dense fog hit the Haridwar side in mid-January 2026, so allow extra time on that road. The first Ardh Kumbh bathing day at Haridwar is 14 January 2027. Suits quiet ashram time and yoga. Skip it if cold mornings put you off.
Rishikesh in February: milder days and a second window
February days reach 22.5 C and nights 9.2 C, with 3.8 rainy days. Rafting is open, and Rajaji Tiger Reserve stays open until 15 June. One Tapovan yoga studio’s winter timetable ends on 28 February. The cold eases through the month, with 57.9 mm of rain. Ask for March quotes now, because rooms tighten in 2027. Suits a working month before the heat, for people who can take chilly mornings.
Rishikesh in March: the best weather, and a crowded week in 2027
March days reach 27.4 C and nights 13.1 C, with 45.8 mm of rain. The International Yoga Festival runs 9 to 15 March 2027, and the Ardh Kumbh bathing days fall on 6 and 8 March, just before it. Expect full rooms and higher nightly rates for 6 to 15 March. Suits anyone who picks the first days of the month or the last two weeks.
Rishikesh in April: warm afternoons and the Char Dham opening
April days reach 32.5 C and nights 17.4 C, with 2.7 rainy days. The Char Dham shrines opened between 19 and 23 April in 2026, and pilgrim traffic builds from then. The last Ardh Kumbh bathing day is 14 April 2027. Do the ghats and the aarti early or late. Suits people who can work mornings and evenings and want AC in the room.
Rishikesh in May: hot days and the heaviest road traffic
Dehradun averages 35.3 C in May and Roorkee 38.0 C, with record highs of 43.1 C and 47.4 C. Weekend jams on 30 to 31 May 2026 followed Char Dham traffic of 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles a day. At least five people drowned at restricted river beaches between May and September 2026, so swim only where it is allowed. Suits people with AC and a fixed reason to come.
Rishikesh in June: humid heat, then the first rain
June days reach 34.1 C and nights stay at 23.2 C, with 231 mm of rain. Rajaji Tiger Reserve shuts on 16 June, and rafting closes on 30 June, or earlier if the river is high. The monsoon arrived on 20 to 24 June in 2025 but only around 30 June in 2026. Suits last-chance rafters. Not for anyone who dislikes humid nights.
Rishikesh in July: rafting shut, the Ganga rising, Kanwar crowds
July brings 621.6 mm of rain over 20.5 days and 79 percent humidity. Rafting and Rajaji are closed. In 2027 Sawan Shivratri falls on 31 July, so expect the Kanwar Yatra in the last two weeks of the month. On 28 July 2026 officials told people at Triveni Ghat, Muni Ki Reti and Laxman Jhula to clear the riverbank. Suits flexible, rain-tolerant workers on a budget.
Rishikesh in August: the wettest month, the Ganga at warning level
August is the wettest month: 714.9 mm over 21.6 days and 83 percent humidity. The Ganga crossed the warning level on 6 August 2026, and on 5 to 6 August 2025 it reached the Shiva statue at Parmarth Niketan. Rishikesh recorded 42 cm of rain in 24 hours in August 2023. We’d skip it. If you must come, keep your dates loose.
Rishikesh in September: rain tapers, rafting restarts in the last week
September gets 305.9 mm over 12 days. The monsoon left Uttarakhand on 26 September in 2025, but had not formally left by 2 October in 2026. Rafting restarted on 27 September 2025 and 23 September 2026 and paused again on 26 September 2026 under a red alert. On 19 September 2026 the state utility declared a power emergency. Suits rafters who can wait for the last week and keep a backup for the router.
Rishikesh in October: the best weather, with long-weekend jams
October days reach 29.0 C and nights 16.3 C, with just 2.1 rainy days. Rafting is open, with the red-alert caveat. The 2 to 3 October 2026 long weekend jammed the roads from Natraj to Muni Ki Reti and Tapovan. Rain is down to 38.3 mm for the month. Suits a working month. Book ahead for weekends, and wait if you can’t face the traffic.
Rishikesh in November: driest month, our pick for a working month
November has 5.2 mm of rain over 0.4 days. Days reach 25.5 C and nights drop to 11.4 C. Rajaji reopens on 15 November (it did in 2025). Diwali falls on 8 November in 2026, so the weekend of 7 to 9 November is the busy one. We’d take the weeks after it for a quiet month. Suits anyone who wants clear skies and cool nights.
Rishikesh in December: cold nights, and the last week fills up
December days reach 21.7 C and nights 7.6 C, with 1.1 rainy days. The record low is 0.0 C. On 23 December 2025 Tapovan and Shivpuri were 60 to 80 percent booked. The long weekends are 25 to 27 December 2026 and 1 to 3 January 2027. Suits quiet ashram time in the first half of the month. Not for a calm room in the last week.
Festivals and dates that change a Rishikesh stay in 2026 and 2027

Kanwar Yatra. In 2026 it ran from 30 July to 11 August, and all vehicles were banned on the Delhi to Haridwar highway from 4 to 12 August. In Rishikesh, large vehicles were parked at Muni Ki Reti and pilgrims walked over the barrage towards Neelkanth. Roads to Neelkanth close for long periods. Sawan Shivratri is on 31 July 2027, so plan around the last two weeks of July.
International Yoga Festival, 9 to 15 March 2027. It is held at Parmarth Niketan in Swarg Ashram. Book a room early and expect higher nightly rates.
Haridwar Ardh Kumbh, 2027. The Akhara Parishad’s secretary announced a procession and bathing on 14 January 2027 and amrit snans on 6 March, 8 March and 14 April. They overlap Rishikesh’s own peak, from January to April.
Char Dham season. The shrines opened between 19 and 23 April in 2026, and 12.6 lakh pilgrims had visited by 13 May. May and June weekends bring highway jams. The shrines have closed from late October to late November in recent years.
Long weekends. The Delhi to Dehradun expressway opened on 14 April 2026 and cut Delhi to Dehradun to about 2.5 hours, so weekend arrivals from Delhi are easier. See how to reach Rishikesh. Also watch Diwali, 25 to 27 December and 1 to 3 January.
Ram Jhula. It closed to everyone on about 25 July 2026 for repairs, with reopening targeted for December 2026.
Working from Rishikesh by season: heat, power cuts, humidity, dengue
Heat and AC. From April to October you want AC. Dehradun’s night minimum stays above 21 C from June to September, and humidity runs 77 to 83 percent from July to September. From November to February AC is not needed, but unheated rooms are cold. Daylight runs from about 10 hours 12 minutes on 21 December to 14 hours 5 minutes on 21 June.
Power. On 19 September 2026 the state utility declared an emergency and began cuts of 35 minutes to 15 hours, staggered by type of consumer, because a weak monsoon had cut hydropower. It asked for more supply for the festive season and the Ardh Kumbh. Ask your host what the backup runs, and whether it covers the router.
Internet. Speeds vary a lot by building. Ask for a speed test taken in the room, and keep a Jio hotspot as a second line. The cost of living guide lists plans.
Mosquitoes and dengue. The state’s dengue months are August to October. Rishikesh town had 108 patients in 2024, 52 in 2025 and 1 up to early September 2026, after municipal surveys and fogging.
Roads. Landslides on the Badrinath highway usually close it for hours, as on 11 July 2026, though further up they can last longer. This affects onward trips more than living in Tapovan.
Who should visit Rishikesh when: a quick decision guide
- Remote workers: come from mid-October to late November. Wait if you can’t work through weekend traffic.
- Rafters: come from October to May. Wait for the second week after restart if you want settled water.
- Yoga students: come in March for the festival, or any dry month for classes. Wait if you want a quiet room in festival week.
- Budget stays: come in the monsoon only if dates can move. Otherwise take mid-November to mid-December.
- Quiet seekers: come in the first half of December or in January. Wait if your only dates are Christmas week.
- Families: stay in the dry weeks of October and November. Wait for the Kanwar weeks to pass.

Frequently asked questions about the best time to visit Rishikesh
Is rafting open in Rishikesh now?
The 2026 to 2027 season was launched at Shivpuri on 23 September 2026 and paused on 26 September under a red weather alert. A high river or an alert can stop it at any time, as the river did on 24 June 2025. Ask the operator the evening before. Helmets and certified life jackets are mandatory under the 2026 rules.
Is Rishikesh safe in the monsoon?
Mostly yes for living in town, with a river that needs respect. The Ganga crossed the warning level on 6 August 2026, and officials cleared the banks at Triveni Ghat, Muni Ki Reti and Laxman Jhula on 28 July 2026. Hill roads close for hours to a day after landslides, so keep onward travel loose between July and September.
How hot does Rishikesh get in May and June?
Daytime averages are 35.3 C in May and 34.1 C in June at Dehradun, and 38.0 C and 37.2 C at Roorkee. Record highs reached 43.1 C and 47.4 C. Nights stay at 21 C or above, so you want AC for a working stay.
How cold are the nights in December and January?
The mean minimum is 7.6 C in December and 6.6 C in January, with record lows of 0.0 C and -1.1 C at Dehradun. Days are mild at 19.7 to 21.7 C. Many rooms are unheated, so ask before you book and bring warm layers.
What is the cheapest time to stay in Rishikesh?
The monsoon, July to mid-September, is the usual low season for nightly stays, with rafting shut and the river high. Monthly prices on the same homes listed for 30 nights showed no consistent season, with March and July 2027 starts flat to lower than a 10 November 2026 start. Ask for quotes for two start dates.
When does Rajaji Tiger Reserve open?
The reserve is open to tourists from 15 November to 15 June and closed from 16 June to 14 November. The Chilla, Motichur, Mohan and Ranipur zones opened on 15 November in 2025, and 15 November 2026 is the expected date this year.
