Workation in Uttarakhand: the towns that work for a week or a month
Ten Uttarakhand towns compared for a working week or month: internet, cost, monsoon, power and the route from Delhi.
Last updated 11 Oct 2026 · 15 min read

For a workation in Uttarakhand, pick a Kumaon ridge such as Almora and Kasar Devi, Mukteshwar or Ranikhet for quiet, or Rishikesh and Dehradun for hospitals and fast road access. A month for one person runs from about ₹17,000 for a room around Almora to ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 comfortably in Rishikesh. Since 14 April 2026 the Delhi to Dehradun expressway cuts the drive to about 2.5 hours. Avoid July to mid-September for the landslides, and expect staggered power cuts since 19 September 2026.

A workation in Uttarakhand works best in two kinds of place: a Kumaon ridge such as Almora, Kasar Devi or Mukteshwar if you want quiet, and Rishikesh or Dehradun if you want a big hospital and a train station close by. Both are easier to reach than a year ago, because the Delhi to Dehradun expressway opened on 14 April 2026 and brings Dehradun to about 2.5 hours from Delhi by road. The monsoon is the catch: 126 roads were blocked on a single day in July 2026, so the month you pick matters as much as the town. We list homes and rooms by the week or the month around Almora and Kasar Devi; this guide covers those and the other towns we would consider.
Uttarakhand towns for a working stay, compared on internet, cost and access
The first table is about working in each place, the second about help and the route in. Costs are a month for one person, and the room is only part of it.

Kumaon for remote work: Almora, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet, Nainital
Kumaon is the eastern half of the state, and we’d look here first for a long, quiet stay. Most of its ridge towns, between 1,200 and 2,300 m, are reached from Kathgodam station near Haldwani.
Almora and Kasar Devi: the town for errands, the hill for quiet

Almora has the bank machines, the hospitals and the bus stand. Kasar Devi, 8 km out, has the pines and the ridge views. Jio sells fibre in Almora from about ₹399 a month plus ₹1,000 to install, and Airtel from about ₹499 plus GST, but neither lists localities, so ask whether a house on the hill is on fibre or a mobile router. A taxi between the two costs about ₹300 to ₹500 one way. Binsar, a forest sanctuary about 30 km north, is a day trip. Our guide to Kasar Devi and Almora for long stays has the detail.

Mukteshwar is a village of 812 people at the 2011 census, with a veterinary research campus and orchards, and winter temperatures can fall below freezing. It is 51 km from Nainital and 65 to 74 km from Kathgodam, and the nearest big hospitals are in Nainital and Haldwani, so a long stay asks you to be organised about medicines. Ranikhet, about 50 km from Almora, is a cantonment town that has housed the Kumaon Regiment since 1869, and snow usually falls there from December to February.

Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal: the lake towns

Nainital is the big lake town, with 41,377 people at the 2011 census, about 2,000 m up and 40 km from Haldwani. The quieter lake towns are 22 to 26 km away and lower: Bhimtal at 1,370 m, 21 km from Kathgodam; Naukuchiatal about 4 km on; and Sattal, a cluster of seven small lakes, about 14 km beyond Bhimtal. Water is the thing to check: Naini Lake fell to 4.7 feet in March 2025, its lowest in five years, and in June 2026 more than 10,000 people in Bhimtal went three days without adequate water after a pump motor failed. The Kainchi Dham fair on 15 June also jams the road towards Almora.
Kausani and Munsiyari: the far end of Kumaon
Kausani is a ridge village at about 1,890 m, 52 km north of Almora, facing Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli. Munsiyari is further: about 2,135 m up, 275 to 300 km from Kathgodam, and the base for treks to Milam, Ralam and Namik glacier. In winter its higher villages are snowed in and people move down to town.

The nearest airport is Pithoragarh’s Naini Saini, 94 km away. Plan on two SIMs: in 2021 a new Jio tower in the Johar valley above the town did not reach Namik village, where people climbed a hill for signal.
Garhwal for remote work: Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Kanatal
Garhwal is the western half, closer to Delhi and to Dehradun’s airport. Its river towns are hot in summer and its ridge towns cold in winter.
Rishikesh and Tapovan: fibre, cafes and a hot summer
Dusk on the Ganga at Rishikesh.
May highs run from the mid-30s to about 40°C, and the monsoon is humid, so the best windows are mid-October to November and mid-February to mid-March. Jio and Airtel both sell fibre, again without naming lanes, so test per house. AIIMS Rishikesh is the big hospital. Meat, fish and eggs are banned inside the municipal limits and liquor across the corporation area. Tapovan sits across the river on the Tehri Garhwal side, and the bridges are in flux: Laxman Jhula has been closed since 2019, Ram Jhula has been shut for repair since about 25 July 2026 with reopening targeted for December, and Janki Setu takes pedestrians and two-wheelers. Our guides cover where to stay in Rishikesh and what a month costs there. We have no homes listed in Rishikesh yet.
Dehradun and its edges: the practical base
Dehradun, at about 450 m, is the state’s hospital, airport and shopping hub. It is hot in May, at a mean high of 35.3°C by the weather department’s 1991 to 2020 averages, and wet in July and August at 622 mm and 715 mm. Rajpur Road is known for its evening buzz. A one-bedroom flat rents for about ₹15,000 to ₹21,000 on crowd-sourced prices, and living costs without rent are about ₹30,000.
Mussoorie and Landour: cold, wet and cantonment-quiet
Mussoorie is at about 2,000 m, 26 km from Dehradun. The January minimum averages 2.8°C, snow falls from December to February though snowy days have declined, and about 2,000 mm of rain falls a year. Landour, about 300 m higher and 2 to 3°C cooler, is a cantonment where a 1924 law has kept new building rare, so there are few places for outsiders to stay.
Kanatal, Dhanaulti, Lansdowne and Chakrata: small and far

Kanatal, 78 km from Dehradun, sits at about 2,400 m, with winters from about -5 to 10°C and snow that blocks roads. Dhanaulti is a similar forest village about 30 km from Mussoorie. Lansdowne, about 1,700 m, is a Garhwal Rifles cantonment 44 km from Kotdwar station. Chakrata, at 2,118 m, is 98 km from Dehradun and an access-restricted cantonment where foreign passport holders face severe restrictions. These suit a short stay in good months, not a first long one.
Internet and mobile networks across Uttarakhand
On 28 February 2026, 16,305 of the state’s 16,456 villages had 4G coverage, about 99%. That is a government count by village, not by room, so the room still matters. In towns, Jio and Airtel both sell fibre in Almora and Rishikesh, from ₹399 and ₹499 a month, and Jio has had 5G in Dehradun since 11 January 2023. In the high valleys the picture is thinner: BSNL has been approved to build 1,202 4G towers for uncovered villages, the largest shares in Pithoragarh (245 villages) and Chamoli (124).
Treat fibre as the main line where the host has it, and carry a Jio and an Airtel SIM as a hotspot, because mobile data counts as a real connection and the two networks fail in different rooms. Each listing on our site shows its wifi speed and the date it was tested.
Power cuts, summer water shortages and winter heating in the hills
On 19 September 2026 the state utility began staggered power cuts after a weak monsoon cut hydropower, reported at 35 minutes to 15 hours by consumer category, about 3 hours in rural Garhwal and about 2 hours 40 minutes in rural Kumaon. In late May 2026 Haldwani had unplanned cuts from overloaded lines, with more than 100 complaints a day. Ask every host what the backup runs, and for how many hours.
Water also runs short in summer. The Naini Lake and Bhimtal cases above are Kumaon’s examples, and Mussoorie’s demand was 12.6 million litres a day in 2023. Ask whether the house has storage and where its supply comes from.
Winter is a heating question. Almora town’s nights average 6 to 7°C from December to February and Kanatal reaches about -5°C. A heater and a power cut are a bad pair, so ask what heats the room and who pays. Our guide to a winter workation in the hills covers the cold months.
Uttarakhand’s monsoon: landslides and closed roads, July to mid-September
In 2025 the monsoon reached Uttarakhand on 20 June, covered the state on 24 June and withdrew on 26 September, against a normal date of 30 September, with 22 percent more rain than average. In 2026 it reached Dehradun about five days late and had not formally left by 2 October.
These dated events show why it shapes the plan. On 3 September 2025 a landslide at Quarab buried the Almora to Haldwani highway, and 59 roads were closed in Almora district. On 15 and 16 September 2025 a cloudburst at Sahastradhara and Maldevta near Dehradun killed at least 15 people in the first count, and the main road from Dehradun to Mussoorie collapsed in parts. On 12 July 2026 the State Emergency Operation Centre counted 126 blocked roads, and on 6 August 2026 more than 100 were closed, among them roads in Bageshwar district.
We would not start a stay between July and mid-September anywhere that depends on one hill road, which is most of Kumaon. Rishikesh and Dehradun are safer for roads, but the Ganga crossed its warning level at Rishikesh on 6 August 2026.
Forest fire season in Uttarakhand, April to June
The forest department counts the fire season from 15 February to 15 June. By 6 May 2026 there were 276 incidents, 207 in Garhwal and 47 in Kumaon. April 2026 saw 162 incidents on 154.62 hectares, against 184 in April 2025 and 724 on 942.65 hectares in April 2024. The risk to a working stay is smoke and a closed road, not the house, so keep your return date loose in April to June.
What a month in Uttarakhand costs
A room around Almora and Kasar Devi runs ₹17,000 to ₹40,000 a month on our listings, or ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a week. A plain dhaba meal costs about ₹100 to ₹200 and a cafe meal ₹200 to ₹400. In Rishikesh, a frugal month for one person is ₹19,300 to ₹33,200, a comfortable one ₹46,300 to ₹70,000, and a thali is ₹80 to ₹150. In Dehradun, a domestic gas cylinder cost ₹961 and petrol ₹99.54 a litre on 8 October 2026. Ask for the price in the month you plan to stay, since many hosts price by season, and ask whether electricity is metered, because winter heaters change that bill.
How to reach Uttarakhand from Delhi: expressway, trains and flights
The Delhi to Dehradun expressway is about 210 km and six lanes, and cuts the drive from 5 to 6.5 hours to about 2.5. A car pays about ₹670 end to end, plaza by plaza. The 50.7 km spur to Haridwar was promised for June 2026, so ask your driver whether it is open before you plan a run to Rishikesh around it; by the older road, Delhi to Rishikesh is 240 to 252 km, about 4 to 5.5 hours. Avoid the Delhi to Haridwar highway in the Kanwar Yatra, which in 2026 ran from 30 July to 11 August, with all vehicles banned from 4 to 12 August.
By train, the Vande Bharat leaves Anand Vihar about 17:50 for Dehradun, arriving about 22:35, six days a week, and the Shatabdi leaves New Delhi about 06:45. Haridwar and Yog Nagari Rishikesh take the Yoga Express and the Kalinga Utkal Express. For Kumaon, Kathgodam has the overnight Ranikhet Express, leaving Old Delhi about 22:30 and arriving about 05:05, and a daytime Shatabdi. Check times on the railway’s own app before booking.
Jolly Grant airport, 25 km from Dehradun and 20 km from Rishikesh, handled 18.71 lakh passengers in the year to March 2026, with routes listed to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Pantnagar has an IndiGo flight to Delhi of about an hour, and is 65 km from Nainital and 120 km from Almora. Winter timetables start on 25 October 2026, so check before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best place in Uttarakhand to work from for a month?
For quiet, the Kumaon ridges around Almora, Kasar Devi, Mukteshwar and Kausani. For hospitals, trains and shops, Rishikesh and Dehradun. We'd start in Almora or Rishikesh because both have fibre sold in town, a government hospital close by and a railhead within a few hours.
Can I work from Uttarakhand on mobile data alone?
In many towns, yes. About 99% of the state's villages had 4G coverage on 28 February 2026, but coverage is counted by village, not by room, so the room matters. Carry a Jio and an Airtel SIM, test both at the door, and ask the host which one holds in your room.
How long is the drive from Delhi to Dehradun now?
About 2.5 hours on the Delhi to Dehradun expressway, which opened on 14 April 2026. The car toll for the full length is about ₹670 one way, charged plaza by plaza. The branch to Haridwar and Rishikesh was promised for June 2026, so ask your driver whether it is open.
Is Uttarakhand safe to travel in during the monsoon?
Roads are the risk, not the towns. On 12 July 2026 landslides blocked 126 roads across the state, and in September 2025 the main road between Dehradun and Mussoorie collapsed in places. If you must go, travel in daylight, leave a day of slack either side, and choose Rishikesh or Dehradun over a village at the end of one hill road.
When is the forest fire season in Uttarakhand?
The forest department counts it from 15 February to 15 June, with April and May the worst. In April 2026 there were 162 incidents against 724 in April 2024. Smoke and closed roads are the risk for a working stay, so keep a flexible return date in those weeks.
Does it snow where I would stay in Uttarakhand?
Light snow comes to Mukteshwar in December and January, and Mussoorie, Landour, Dhanaulti and Kanatal see snow from December to February. Almora saw its first snow of the 2024 winter around 9 December. Dehradun's January nights average 6.6°C, so Rishikesh and Dehradun are cold at night but not snowy.
Do I need a permit to stay in Chakrata?
Chakrata is an access-restricted military cantonment, and foreign passport holders face severe restrictions on visiting. Indian citizens should still check the entry rules with the host before travelling, and anyone with a foreign passport should plan for a different town.
Is a week enough to test a town before booking a month?
Yes. A week shows you the connection on your longest call day, the walk from the road, the night cold and the distance to a pharmacy. The shortest stay we list is one week, and you can extend it by the week or the month if the place suits you.
