Best time to visit Manali for work, snow, treks and low prices

Late September to mid-November for a working month. Late January to March for snow in town.

Last updated 8 Oct 2026 · 14 min read

Snowy mountains and dark forest on a foggy day in Manali

For a working month come from late September to mid-November, for snow from late January to March, for treks and the high roads from mid-May, and for low prices from July to mid-September. October and November are the driest months, with under 2 rainy days each on average, while the town had no snow through December 2025 and saw its first on 23 to 24 January 2026. The cheap window has a price: the Kullu to Manali road was shut for 21 days from 26 August 2025.

The best time to visit Manali depends on what you came for. The usual advice is March to June for sightseeing, October to February for snow and skip July to September. That advice hides two things: town snow has arrived anywhere from mid-November to late January, and the monsoon can close the main road for three weeks, as it did from 26 August 2025. If you need a single month, we’d say October for the driest weather with the passes still open, and November for a quieter town.

Temperatures and rain below are long-term averages from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 1991 to 2020.

Best time to visit Manali by goal: work, snow, treks, prices

  • A working month: late September to mid-November. Days average 21.6 C in October and 17.3 C in November, with nights of 6.3 C and 2.6 C. Kullu Dasehra week and the long weekends fill the roads, so book around them.
  • Snow in town: late January to March. Not December. Solang and the tunnel side hold snow more reliably than the town does.
  • Treks and the high roads: from mid-May. Rohtang and the Manali to Leh highway open around then and start closing in October or November. The treks guide covers individual trails.
  • Low prices: July to mid-September. Hotel occupancy dipped below 10 percent at the monsoon peak. You pay in rain, landslide risk and a ban on adventure sports. For quiet without the risk, take November.
  • A honeymoon: late September to November. We’d pick these weeks because they are dry and miss the holiday rush. If you want snow, late January to February is likelier than December, with a fallback plan.

Snowfall in Manali: when it actually comes

The town sits at about 2,050 m, and snow there is not guaranteed in any month. Treat the first fall as a window, not a date. In recent winters it has landed anywhere from mid-November to late January:

  • 2022 to 2023: 14 November 2022, washed away by rain, while Solang kept about 4 inches.
  • 2023 to 2024: a dry December and January. Snow reached the town around 30 to 31 January 2024.
  • 2024 to 2025: snow at Rohtang, Marhi and the Atal Tunnel’s south portal on 23 November 2024, and in the town on 8 to 9 December 2024.
  • 2025 to 2026: nothing at Christmas or New Year. The first snow came on 23 to 24 January 2026, ending a three-month dry spell.

December 2025 is the cautionary case. Manali recorded 0.0 mm of rain for the month, and dry weather had lasted 54 days across the state by 29 December. Even so, over 33,500 vehicles entered Manali from 1 to 27 December, and about 95 percent of rooms were booked until 5 January.

Snow is more dependable higher up. Rohtang had about 4 inches on 18 September 2026, and both ends of the Atal Tunnel had snow by 4 October. Rohtang gives you snow at the edges of its season, not in midwinter, because early snow or the winter order shuts it. Solang is 13 to 14 km north of Manali; see the things to do guide.

If you want snow, we’d book a stay with flexible dates, aim for late January to March, and keep two spare days, because snow brings its own problems. On 24 to 25 January 2026, snow and a long weekend produced an 8 km jam, hotels near full and 685 roads shut across the state, 79 of them in Kullu. The Atal Tunnel approach was blocked on 23 and 27 January 2026. Don’t prepay a Christmas package expecting snow on the doorstep, and read the fine print, because heaters and compulsory festive meals are often extras.

Manali weather by season: what each one is really like

Manali in late winter (late January to March): snow and damp cold

This is the season for snow, not for comfort. Snow in town is likeliest now, with 90 to 155 mm of precipitation a month from January to March. The price is damp cold: March is the wettest month outside the monsoon, and much of it falls as sleet. Check the heating before you book.

Manali in spring (April to mid-May): mild, but the passes are shut

Green slopes and distant snow peaks in the Kullu valley in spring Spring in the Kullu valley. April days climb to about 21 C, but half the map is shut. The passes stay closed until the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has cleared the Leh highway and Rohtang opens in mid-May, so don’t build a spring trip around Rohtang.

Manali in peak summer (mid-May to June): warm, open, crowded

Open green slopes under a streaked blue sky at Rohtang Pass Rohtang Pass once the road opens for summer. Days sit around 25 C, and the Leh highway takes all traffic from 1 June in 2026. It is also when jams reach 10 km and rates peak, so book early and do your Solang run in the morning.

Manali in monsoon (July to mid-September): cheap, wet and risky

Low cloud hanging in the forested hills above Manali Cloud sitting in the hills above Manali. Occupancy fell below 10 percent at the peak, but this is the season the road closes. It splits into three windows.

  • To 14 July: rain builds, with July averaging 201.5 mm, but the 2026 adventure ban had not started.
  • 15 July to 15 September: the ban window. The Kullu District Tourism Officer barred rafting on the Beas, paragliding, river crossing and bungee jumping for these dates in 2026. August is the wettest month.
  • From 16 September: the ban lifts, rain eases and apples are being harvested. Occupancy is back above 30 percent.

The record is the reason to be careful. On 26 August 2025 the Beas flood washed away a multi-storey hotel and shops in Manali, about 200 m of the Manali to Leh highway and the bridge on the Old Manali link road. The 38 km Kullu to Manali stretch stayed closed for 21 days, reopening on 16 September to one-way traffic. The Mandi to Kullu stretch also shut for four days in late August.

Statewide, 313 roads were blocked on 16 August 2025 and 869 on 7 September, 227 of them in the Kullu region. Those are snapshots, not season totals, and not Manali alone. In 2026, Mandi to Kullu traffic was suspended on 11 to 12 August.

Manali in autumn (mid-September to November): the easiest season

Rows of apple trees with green mountains behind An apple orchard in the hills. We’d pick this season. October and November average under 2 rainy days a month. Dasehra and long weekends bring crowds, and an early snow can shut Rohtang overnight, as it did on 9 October 2025 before it reopened on 25 October.

Manali before the snow (December to mid-January): sunny and dry

It is not the snow trip the photos promise. Days reached 18.4 C in December 2025. Christmas to New Year is the dearest stretch, with one property from ₹14,500, and town snow may simply not come.

Best month to visit Manali: all twelve compared

Manali in January: cold nights and the best odds of snow

January is cold, worth it when it snows, and unreliable. Nights sit just below freezing, and the record low is -11.6 C. Some seasonal businesses close or cut their hours. Town snow came on 30 to 31 January 2024 and 23 to 24 January 2026, so late January is your best shot. Suits snow seekers with flexible dates and a working heater. With a fixed deadline, come in October instead.

Manali in February: a second chance at snow, still cold

February is a fair second chance at snow if January fails you. Days stay cold, nights hover just above freezing, and Rohtang and the Leh highway are still shut. February averages 114 mm of precipitation. Losar, the Tibetan new year, fell on 18 February in 2026. Ask for quotes in both January and February before you choose. Suits snow seekers with flexible dates who want a few more weeks of odds.

Manali in March: wetter than expected, with sleet and snow

March is wetter than most people expect. It is the wettest month outside the monsoon, with 155 mm over 8.4 days, and in this cold much of it falls as snow or sleet. BRO began clearing the Leh highway on 27 March in 2026, and over 1,000 vehicles were stranded on the Atal Tunnel road in a March 2026 snow episode. Suits people who can live with sleet and a closed Rohtang.

Manali in April: mild, with Rohtang still shut

April is mild and easy, if a little early. Rohtang is still shut and the Leh highway is still being cleared, so this is a month for the valley, not the passes. Nights stay cold, so check the heating. Paragliding is reliable from March to June. Suits anyone who wants mild weather without the May and June crowds and can skip the high passes.

Manali in May: the passes open and the crowds follow

Rohtang opened between 15 and 17 May in 2026, with 1,200 permits a day, and hotel occupancy touched 80 percent on 3 May. It is the driest month before the monsoon, with 66 mm. Book early, and apply for the Rohtang permit on the official portal, up to two days ahead. Suits people who want the passes and accept the queues.

Manali in June: warm, busy and peak prices

The Leh highway opened to all civilian traffic on 1 June in 2026 and the HRTC Delhi to Leh bus began on 8 June, so this is the month for road travellers heading on. Rain starts to build towards July. Suits Leh-bound road trips. If you want a quiet room, come in November instead.

Manali in July: cheap rooms, unreliable roads

Rafting, paragliding and bungee were banned from 15 July in 2026, and online bookings are almost negligible in the monsoon, so rooms are easy to find. A July 2025 landslide closed the road for about 24 hours. Suits flexible workers on a tight budget who can lose a day. Don’t book a fixed-date call.

Manali in August: the wettest month, and the one we would skip

We’d skip this month. It is the wettest of the year, with 217 mm over 14.9 days. On 11 August 2026 the state had 260 roads closed and the Mandi to Kullu highway was blocked, and the Beas flood of 26 August 2025 came in this month. The adventure ban runs to 15 September. Suits almost nobody. If you must come, take a place where you can stay extra nights if the road shuts.

Manali in September: wait for the third week

The ban ended on 15 September in 2026, and in 2025 the Kullu to Manali road reopened on the 16th after 21 days. Rain disrupted the apple harvest this month, and Rohtang had its first snow on 18 September. Suits visitors who can arrive after the 15th and want rooms before the October rush. Occupancy is back above 30 percent.

Manali in October: best weather, busiest weekends

Rain is minimal. The 3 to 4 October weekend brought over 4,000 vehicles in two days, with weekend occupancy at 60 to 70 percent. A paragliding pre-World Cup runs at Solang Nala on 9 to 12 October, and Kullu Dasehra on 21 to 27 October. Suits a working month. Book ahead, and skip Dasehra week if you want quiet.

Manali in November: dry, quiet and cold at night

Our pick for a quiet working month. It is dry, with 31 mm over 1.8 days, cold at night, and cheaper before the holiday spike. Rohtang and the Leh highway closed around 20 November in 2025, so there are no pass trips. Town snow first came on 14 November in 2022, so a winter surprise is possible. Suits people who want a dry, quiet month and don’t mind cold nights.

Manali in December: sunny days, no promise of snow

Days are sunny and nights sit around freezing. December 2024 had 87 mm of rain and a low of -2.8 C, while December 2025 had none at all. Christmas to New Year is the dearest stretch, with about 95 percent of rooms booked in 2025 and heaters often extra. Suits people who want sun and are not counting on snow. Not for a quiet room at Christmas.

Festivals and dates that change a Manali trip in 2026

Kullu Dasehra, 21 to 27 October 2026. The festival is held at Dhalpur Maidan in Kullu, with 347 deities invited against 332 in 2025. Some dates circulate as 20 to 26 October, so confirm with your host. Kullu is 40 km from Manali and its hotels fill by early October, so many visitors stay in Manali or Naggar. It is also spelled Dussehra.

Delhi to Kullu flights. Direct Delhi to Kullu flights stop after 24 October 2026. Jaipur flights (Thursdays and Saturdays) and Dehradun flights (Tuesdays and Thursdays) start on 27 October at about ₹4,000. The how to reach guide covers the road.

Winter Carnival. The 2026 edition opened on 20 to 21 January, and the 2025 one began on 2 January.

Working from Manali by season: power, internet, heating and rent

Power. Outages are a known weak spot in Manali’s infrastructure, and the January 2026 snowfall came with a power cut. Plan for cuts on snow days, and ask what the backup runs, because “power backup” may not cover the geyser or heater.

Internet. The August 2025 flood cut mobile and internet networks in Manali. Jio is strong in town and Airtel’s 4G works indoors. A phone hotspot covers a failed broadband line, though not a regional outage like the flood.

Heating and light. Room heaters often cost extra, such as ₹500 a day on one Christmas package. Ask whether heating is in your monthly quote. At Manali’s latitude, daylight runs 10 hours 1 minute on 21 December and 14 hours 15 minutes on 21 June. The ridges cut the direct sun on the ground further, most of all in December and January.

Rent through the year. Occupancy is lowest from July to September, so that is when we’d expect the most room to haggle. Ask for quotes for two seasons and compare; see cost of living and where to stay. Some cafes close or cut their hours in January and in the monsoon.

Is Manali safe to visit right now? (October 2026)

Yes, for a normal trip, with checks on the day. The 3 to 4 October weekend brought 4,000 vehicles in two days and about 150 Volvo buses, with brief jams. Rohtang was open to permit holders, and both ends of the Atal Tunnel had snow. The new Deod and Hanogi tunnels between Pandoh and Takoli opened on 11 September 2026, though some days a convoy-halt bottleneck slows the road between Pandoh and Aut.

Conditions change fast. Early snow shut Rohtang on 9 October 2025, so it can close at short notice. The Leh highway’s winter closure is expected between late October and mid-November, and it closed on 20 November in 2025. The day before you travel, check the Kullu district administration’s orders, the Himachal Pradesh traffic police’s road updates and IMD Shimla’s forecast and alerts, and the permit portal if you are going up to Rohtang.

Who should visit Manali when: a quick decision guide

  • Remote workers: come from late September to mid-November. Wait if you need quiet in Dasehra week.
  • Snow seekers: come from late January to March with flexible dates. Wait if only Christmas week works for you.
  • Trekkers and road travellers: come from mid-May. Wait if you are planning for March or April.
  • Budget travellers: come in the monsoon only if your dates can move. Otherwise wait for November.
  • Honeymooners: come in late September to November, or late January to February with a plan B. Wait if your only dates are 25 December to 5 January, or May and June.

Frequently asked questions about the best time to visit Manali

How cold does Manali get at night in winter?

The January mean minimum is -1.1 C, and December and February are about 0.3 C. The record lows are -11.6 C in January, -11.0 C in February and -10.0 C in December. December 2024's coldest night was -2.8 C and December 2025's was 1.1 C, so a typical winter night is a good deal milder than the record.

Does it snow in Manali at Christmas?

Not reliably. Snow reached the town on 8 to 9 December 2024, and Manali was white on Christmas Day 2024. In 2025 the town had no snow at Christmas or New Year, and December had 0.0 mm of rain in Manali.

Is Rohtang Pass open?

In 2026 it opened in mid-May, and on 4 October it was open to permit holders. Early snow shut it on 9 October 2025, so it can close at short notice. The official portal, rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in, issues permits for the next 2 days only, and an issued permit cannot be cancelled. Check the portal the evening before you go.

Do I need a permit for the Atal Tunnel?

No permit is needed, and it is open all year. Stopping, parking and photography inside the tunnel are not allowed. After heavy snow the approach roads can close, with tourists held at Solang or Palchan.

When do the Manali to Leh highway and Rohtang close for winter?

The dates move each year. The Leh highway closed to all vehicles on 20 November 2025, and the 2026 closure is expected between late October and mid-November. Rohtang's winter closure order ran from 20 November 2025, with a morning window for 4x4 vehicles to 28 December, and it was officially closed on 3 January 2026.

What is the best time to visit Manali for a honeymoon?

We'd pick late September to November, because it is dry and misses the holiday rush. If you want snow, late January to February is likelier than December, with a fallback plan. We would avoid 25 December to 5 January, May to June and the monsoon.

Is the Manali monsoon dangerous?

It carries real road risk. The 26 August 2025 Beas flood washed away a hotel and shops in Manali, and the Kullu to Manali stretch closed for 21 days. In 2026 Mandi to Kullu traffic was suspended on 11 to 12 August. Landslides and falling stones are the main danger on the highway, so avoid fixed deadlines from July to September.
